about

I was invited by my friend Jude Profit of GumLock Records to write a song for a compilation album of Pittsburgh musicians in solidarity with Palestine. I wrote two. The first was too on the nose, and this is the one I liked the most.

lyrics

Thank God for the youth
They can chew gum & walk at the same time &
Open ears & their eyes &
Spot lies in the news
Three cheers for the boomer who
Paid off the McMansion with their brains lost in the sewer their
Cable bills, our college debt the same amount
Taxing babies since 911
Still in the dark & remain in doubt
Still in the same old painted house
Truckload of debt tryin' to pay it down
Push the body more than it may allow
Found spare change couldn't change the couch
Whole world watch you push your neighbor 'round
Bully on the block tryin' to assign the blame
All goes on while we ride the train
All in our name it's a cryin' shame
Handed 'em the bomb while supplyin' aid
That's where the anger comes from
Ruling class mad when it resonate
Raise your voice now, never hesitate
Flowers from the rubble

Chorus (repeat x 4):

When it showers you can see the grown flowers through the puddle
Flowers from the rubble

Look at all Big Tech watching us
Tentacles surrounding like an octopus
Just enough time when I caught the bus
History tells us to not give up
Gotta fight the urge and rise up & rush
Push back on the rich lobbyin'
Doesn't matter what kind of job you're in
Fought for the minimum
Talked in the living room
FDR by the fireside
Look for the courage that you find inside
Every Freedom Rider had to climb inside
Stoking any flame keep the fire alive
Never let 'em draw the dividing line
All becomes clear when you widen eyes
Keep in mind that when you bide your time
Life is short and it's flying by
Watching every move when we try and rise
Pinning us down to coordinates
Claiming that we're equal, but they treat us like subordinates
Recognize really is more than this
Feel where the anger comes from
Ruling class mad when it resonate
Raise your voice now, never hesitate
Flowers from the rubble

Chorus (repeat x 8):

When it showers you can see the grown flowers through the puddle
Flowers from the rubble
